NCCP Context: Community Sport – Initiation
Softball Coaches who are coaching the following age categories should attend this clinic as per Softball Canada Long Term Player Development model:
Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch for House League:
- U6-– House League and House League Select
- U8– House League and House League Select
- U10– House League and House League Select
And the following variations of the game (Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch) which include:
- Learn to Play
- BlastBall
- Coach Pitch
- 5-Pitch

This workshop has been designed for the community softball coach who is working with children or youth and is introducing the basic skills of softball. The focus of this course is:
- Your coaching philosophy
- Making Ethical decisions
- Understanding the rules and equipment of Softball
- Teaching basic skills of Softball
- Modifying a pre-designed practice
For a Softball Coach to be “Trained” in this context they need to complete the following steps:

2. Register and submit payment for the Clinic that meets their needs. $75.00 per participant plus HST.
3. Attend the Learn to Coach clinic in its entirety

Learn2Coach:
Deposit: $85+HST
Softball Ontario will rebate the host up to $800 for facility costs and Janitorial services upon submission of a receipt from the facility, school board, town etc.
Host will need to advise if they will be providing a lunch or if participants will be required to provide their own.

Community Coach Clinic – 16 Hours
NCCP Context: Community Sport- On-going Participation
Softball Coaches who are coaching the following age categories should attend this clinic as per Softball Canada’s Long Term Player Development Model:

Coaches encourage participants of all ages to continue in the Sport for fun, fitness, skill development and social interaction. This training allows coaches to help their players to love softball, learn more skills and continue participation.
For a Softball Coach to be “Trained” in this context they need to complete the following steps:
1. Check the Softball Ontario website at the following link to see where and when clinics are being offered
2. Register and submit payment for the Clinic that meets their needs. $125.00 per participant plus HST.
3. Complete Foundations of coaching Softball Part 1 which can be accessed at visit The Locker by clicking here! You will need your NCCP number and your password to log in to The Locker. If you have taken an NCCP clinic or workshop in any sport, you will already have an NCCP number. You should only ever have one NCCP number!! Use the “lookup my NCCP#” or “Forgot password” functions on the login page to retrieve this information. If you have never taken an NCCP clinic or workshop, use the “Don’t have an NCCP #? Create one now” function on the login page to get one after providing the required information. Once you are logged in to the Locker, your NCCP dashboard will appear. Select the eLearning tab. Then use the pull-down menu to select “Softball” (the default is showing “Multi-Sport”) and under the “Available” menu on the left hand side, you will see all the Softball eLearning modules available to complete.
4. Attend the Community Softball Coach clinic in its entirety

Competition Introduction – Softball, Challenge Process
Softball Coaches who are coaching the following age categories should attend this clinic:
U14 – Competitive and Representative
U16 – Competitive and Representative
U19 – Competitive and Representative
U23 – Competitive and Representative
Intermediate – Competitive and Representative
Senior – Competitive and Representative
Masters – Competitive and Representative
*this applies to teams playing in Provincials and Nationals
Note: It is strongly recommended that the coach attend the Make Ethical Decision Module session at the Competition-Introduction Multi Sport workshop (usually Part A) or Softball Competition – Introduction Clinic (usually the What to Weekend #1 Clinic) before completing the On-Line test. The information and training obtained at the Make Ethical Decision Module training session is very specific and increase the coaches chance of being successful in passing. If a softball coach does not take the Make Ethical Decisions training, there will be a chart to take the On-Line Test for plus tax. You will only have 2 opportunities to pass this evaluation. If you don’t pass after two tries, you will then be required to attend the above mentioned training. If a softball Coach does take the training, there is no plus tax and you get unlimited attempts to pass.
For a Softball Coach to be “Certified” in this context they need to complete the following steps:
- The Coach contacts Softball Ontario to register for the Competition – Introduction On-Field Evaluation
- The Coach reads this new process mandated by Softball Canada to complete a Challenge Process. Click here for directions.
- The Coach will contact Softball Ontario to request the Challenge Request Form.
- Softball Ontario informs the coach about the requirements for evaluation for coaches who have not completed the training but wish to go directly to evaluation. They must:
- Complete the Coaching Association of Canada’s Online Make Ethical Decision evaluation and successfully pass it
- Complete and submit the evaluation package to Softball Ontario which needs to be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled on-field evaluation. The evaluation package consists of:
- Coach Portfolio (Including: Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for their home park and a Practice Plan for two hours)
- Purchase relevant Softball’s Technical Manual(s) and all the relevant Multi-Sport Module Coach Workbooks and Reference Material. The cost is plus HST per manual.
- Complete the Foundations of Coaching Softball Part 1 and 2 eLearning Modules.
- Softball Ontario will forward the package to the Evaluator for review (pre-interview)
- The Evaluator will inform Softball Ontario of the pre-interview outcome
- If the Evaluator confirms the coach is ready for evaluation, Softball Ontario will contact the coach and outline the OFE process and inform the coach of the requirements which are:
- The coach will complete a written practice plan that will be submitted to the Evaluator at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the evaluation.

- The practice will be a minimum of 45 minutes in length
- The coach will select at least one basic skill from the list provided and include at least one drill or activity to teach this basic skill in their practice. Click HERE for the list
- The coach will select at least one tactic from the list provided that uses the skill selected and include at least one drill or activity to teach this tactic in their practice. Click HERE for the list
- The coach will complete and submit Part A of Regional Coach Observation Package that will be submitted to the Evaluator at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the evaluation. Click Here to view the Observation Package.
- If the Evaluator confirms the coach is ready for evaluation, Softball Ontario will contact the coach and outline the OFE process and inform the coach of the requirements which are:
- Softball Ontario will contact the coach and confirm the date, location and coach’s assigned time fo their evaluation.
- The coach completes the OFE including the Analyze Performance evaluation (which is watching video and pointing out how to redirect the softball athletes with their softball skills). The coach will run a practice that is supplied with 9 softball athletes (U14 and above)
- The NCCP Coach Developer conducts the evaluation by conducting a 20 minute welcome interview, by observing a 45 minutes practice, 15-30 minute skill analysis and 20 minute debrief.
- The Evaluator provides the Coach a copy of On Field Evaluation form and a Competition-Introduction, Softball On Field Evaluation completion certificate, submits the evaluation report to Softball Ontario. The Evaluator keeps a copy for their records.
Competition-Introduction, Softball – 40 Hours Total
The National Coaching Certification Program for Competition – Introduction, Softball Clinic includes*:
- 1st Weekend/What to Coach clinic 16 hours (usually two (2) eight (8) hour days 9:00 am – 5:00 pm)
Softball Coaches who are coaching the following age categories should attend this clinic according to Softball Long Term Player Development Plan:
- U14 – Competitive- participating in a Provincial or Canadian Championships
- U16 – Competitive- participating in a Provincial or Canadian Championships
- U19 – Competitive- participating in a Provincial or Canadian Championships
- U23- Competitive- participating in a Provincial or Canadian Championships

The goals of this course are to promote fun, fitness, fundamentals and performance among the beginning and intermediate coaches who are either coaching youths and/or adults.
Stages of Progress in the National Coaches Certification Program include:
Trained– this is when a Coach has attended the clinic portion (Weekend #1 and Weekend #2) and completed the Make Ethical Decisions Online Test/Evaluation of the requirements of the NCCP

The National Coaching Certification Program for Competition – Introduction, Softball Clinic includes*:
- 2nd Weekend/How to Coach clinic 16 hours (usually two (2) eight (8) hour days 9:00 am – 5:00 pm)*must take Weekend #1/What to Coach to be eligible to attend
- Make Ethical Decisions On-Line Evaluation 2 hours (this section is completed independently by the Coach on their own timelines on www.coach.ca)
- Preparation Time for the On-Field Evaluation Clinic- 6 hours (this section is completed independently by the Coach on their own timelines prior to submitting their application for the On Field Evaluation/Clinic* must be two weeks prior to the actual OFE)

7. Coach completes the following requirements (estimated time to complete everything is about 6 hours) and submits a soft copy (scan/email; Dropbox) to the Softball Ontario office (attention Program Coordinator, Madison Pasma: mpasma@softballontario.ca ) (Hard copies will not be accepted and will be returned to the Coach for re-submission):
- Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for the Coach’s home field
- Softball Canada Competition – Introduction Coach Portfolio – Coaches are asked to refer to the resources materials received from Weekend #1/What to Coach and Weekend #2/How to Coach specifically the Coach Portfolio (purple)
- Practice Plan: the coach will complete a written practice plan that will be submitted to the evaluator at least 2 weeks prior to the date of the evaluation. The practice plan will outline a practice for 2 hours and will capture the activities based on a skill selected from the lists below:

- The actual on-field evaluation practice will be a minimum of 45 minutes in length teaching the selected skill(s):

8. Softball Ontario will contact the Coach and confirm the date, location and Coach’s assigned time for their Evaluation once the Emergency Action Plan, Softball Canada Competition-Introduction, Softball Portfolio and Practice Plan have met the minimum NCCP requirements.
9. The coach completes the On Field Evaluation by running a practice that is supplied with 9 softball athletes (U14 and above) and must the Analyze Performance evaluation (which is watching video and pointing out how to redirect the softball athletes with their softball skills).
10. The NCCP Coach Developer conducts the evaluation by conducting a 20-minute welcome interview, by observing a 45-minute practice, 15-30 minute Skill Analysis (watching video and identifying what skills need to be corrected) and 20 minute debrief. 11. The NCCP Coach Developer provides the Coach a copy of On-Field Evaluation form and a Competition-Introduction, Softball On Field Evaluation completion certificate, submits the evaluation report to Softball Ontario. The NCCP Coach Developer keeps a copy for their records.
