Insurance
Softball Ontario’s Umpire insurance program details are outlined in the registration booklet you received upon registration. Over the years, Softball Ontario has received a number of questions regarding this program. The following highlights the common questions:
- The accident insurance portion of this program is secondary coverage to any other Government, Individual or other type of coverage in force at the time of the accident. For example, if you have accident insurance at work, you would apply there first and then apply to Softball Ontario
- This is not a loss of wage policy
- If you purchased both exams in the current year, your insurance coverage is for officiating organized fast pitch and organized slo-pitch games (including exhibition)
- If you purchased only the fast pitch exam, your insurance coverage is for officiating organized fast pitch games only (including exhibition). (See note below)
- If you purchased FP Local only in the current year, your insurance coverage is for officiating organized fast pitch games at the local level (including exhibition and local tournaments)-See note below
- A registered Softball Ontario umpire will still be covered under our policy even if they are working with a non-registered umpire
- Passing or even writing the annual exam does not affect your insurance coverage

NEW FOR 2020
Softball Ontario has made a few changes to the umpire registration options for the 2020 season. They are as follows;
Umpire Local 2020 ($77.00) – Should be selected by any umpire who wishes to only umpire local league or invitational tournament play. Umpires who select this option will NOT be eligible for any Softball Ontario Sanctioned Tournament play. NOTE: FASTPITCH UMPIRES ONLY.
Umpire FP + SP 2020 ($113.00) – Should be selected by any umpire who wishes to umpire local league and invitational tournaments, but also be eligible to Umpire at a Softball Ontario Sanctioned Provincial, Qualifier or Elimination Tournament or Softball Canada Canadian Championship. *Please note this fee will register umpires for both Fast Pitch and Slo Pitch.
New 2020 Prorate Umpire Package
Clinics
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Softball Ontario has cancelled ALL umpire clinics for this season.
For 2020 only, we will allow all those JD/Intermediate umpires registered in 2019 to re-register for the 2020 season without the requirement of having to do so through clinic attendance. All clinic materials will be sent to our JD/Intermediate umpires via email after they have registered online.

Umpire Fees
Junior Development Clinic
6 hours
Ages 12-16
Designed to meet the needs of the young novice umpire. The clinic covers umpire signals, using the Rule Book, game management techniques, the role of the umpire, umpire responsibilities and the rules. The Junior Development Umpire receives a Softball Ontario Junior Development Umpire manual, a clinic certificate and accident and liability insurance coverage.
Intermediate Umpire

Ages 15-18, or an individual under 15 who has taken a Junior clinic
The Intermediate Umpire clinic is designed for young officials under 19 to be able to officiate at house league games and to prepare them as they advance in their umpiring career. What a great way for Minor Softball Associations who want to continue training their Umpires for their minor divisions and house league games. Topics covered at this clinic include: game management techniques, the role of the Umpire.
Combined Junior and Intermediate Clinic
Under 19 Years of Age
This clinic is a combo deal of Junior and Intermediate Clinics. This clinic is eight (8) hours in length, for the first six (6) hours of the combined clinic, those registered for the Junior and Intermediate portions would cover the same curriculum. At that time, those registered for the Junior portion would have completed their clinic. The Intermediate umpires would then receive the required two (2) more hours of instruction.
Futures Program
An individual will be placed into this category provided he/she is age 15-18 at the time of the clinic (as identified by Softball Ontario) and has attended an Intermediate clinic in the current and previous year. Members of the category will receive:
- Softball Canada affiliation
- Full Level 1 Umpire certification
- The ability to purchase a Level 1 manual
- Full registration/Membership status
- Full carded status upon successful completion of Softball Canada FP Level 1 Umpire exam
- Upgrade their Liability and Accident insurance coverage to include participation in all FP Softball.
Umpire Refresher Clinic
This new and improved clinic will include discussion advanced rule interpretation, new rules and will feature an in-depth question and answer period. Due to the advanced discussion taking place, the Refresher clinic is better suited to the advanced umpire who has completed the umpire certification program.
Blue Symposium
The Blue Symposium (formerly known as the ITC Weekend) is an annual umpire training and networking event that prepares the best Blue Crew in the country!

Both the Fast Pitch Umpire Committee is under the leadership of the Fast Pitch Provincial Umpire-in-Chief, who strives to provide quality officiating in Ontario. Both the Fast Pitch and the Slo-Pitch Umpire Committees ensure the proper and efficient delivery of umpire clinics, the on-field evaluation program, provide quality umpires to Provincial and Canadian championships, promote the program, trains qualified clinic instructors/evaluators and looks to the future for the program. The Committee meets twice a year in January and September to plan the upcoming season and discuss the previous.

What does the umpire committee do for you and why you should want to be a part of it? Softball Ontario has produced some of the most experienced, disciplined and well-respected umpires known throughout the world. Ontario umpires continue to represent our program Nationally and Internationally in a very professional manner. The umpires of Ontario should be proud of that fact. Ontario umpires strive to be the best, due to the support and dedication that Softball Ontario has had from the Umpire’s Committee (past and present). You have nine (9) dedicated hard working individuals working for you at the Committee level, doing things like:
- Continuing to review and develop new innovative clinics – beyond the Softball Canada Certification program
- Trains clinic instructors and on field evaluators to insure that they provide you the umpire with the best service possible
- Insures the delivery of the Softball Canada Certification clinic program
- Developed, maintaining and delivery of the Junior Development Program
- Provides Rule Interpretations
- Attends Provincial (Member Association’s) and National (Softball Canada) Annual General MeetingsRepresenting the Ontario Umpires
- Recruits, Assigns and Trains Zone Representatives to assist you all year long (including, instructing at your clinics, UICing at your tournaments, and evaluating you at your games.) Appoints umpires to annual elite Provincial Grand Championships, Provincials and Elimination Tournaments
- Appoints umpires to annual Canadian Championships Ensures UIC’s are appointed for all Regional, and Provincial Tournaments
- Develops Educational resources for umpires (including articles in the Softball News)
- Develops the Umpires’ Program Budget
- Develops programs policies and procedures
Slo-Pitch Umpire Committee

The Slo-Pitch Umpire Committee is under the leadership of the Slo-Pitch Provincial Umpire-in-Chief, who strives to provide quality officiating in Ontario.
